Bee keeping
Bee keeping is simply the process of cultivating bees for honey production. Bee keeping is not as hard as people think rather it is a very interesting and fun experience.

After getting every equipment needed, the next step is to start up your bee farm. Starting up a bee farm is not tedious all you need is to get a space where your bee hive can be kept. It is advisable to keep the bee hive in a garden where fruits and flowers are much since the nectars and juice the bees suck are what is being converted into honey

Your bee hive should have a bottom board, a lid as well as frames (parts which are being attached inside the beehive) on which the honey combs can be placed by bees.

The next thing to do is to buy your bees, when purchasing your bees make sure to purchase a colony, a colony is made up of the queen bee, the drones and the workers. The workers are responsible for producing the honey; the queen lays eggs while the drones get the queen pregnant.

As a beginner it is advisable to start with two to four hives so as to get firsthand experience on bee keeping. One important factor to note before you start up a bee keeping business is educating yourself, take courses on beekeeping attend local beekeepers meetings, make sure you gain more knowledge before going into the business.

These steps are further summarized below:

      1) Get a good location. When we talk of location here we mean a place where human population is not much. If you would start your bee farm in a highly populated area then there has to be some form of control which is a bit difficult.

Your bees should have enough space to move about as this affects their productivity. As we noted earlier keeping them close to a garden would be a very nice idea. You can meet a fruit farmer or gardener to help out with the location, they would likely agree since bees’ aid in pollination.

     2) Purchase your bee hive. A hive is more like a box or basket where bees live in. your bee hive should be spacious enough because a colony is up to a 100,000 bees. Frames should be fixed into these hives; these frames provide space for the bees to place the honey combs.

    3) Register your bee farm. Registering your bee farm is very important, because this concerns health. Consult with your state agricultural department to know the requirements for starting up a bee farm. It is also important to join your local bee farmers association, this is to enable you enjoy certain benefits you wouldn’t get if alone.

   4) Purchase your bees. When purchasing your bees, it is very important to ask questions and get answers from experts before purchasing. Put it in mind that you need to purchase a whole colony as earlier noted. Sometimes amateur bee farmers who don’t ask questions end up buying a weak colony and as a result fail in the business.

     5) Educate yourself. There is a saying that says education has no age limit, this also applies to bee farming. As a bee farmer it is very important to take courses on bee farming both paid and free. Taking courses help improve your knowledge on bee farming and a good knowledge improves productivity.

Harvesting your honey
Honey harvesting is a simple process which doesn’t take long to carry out. As an amateur it is advisable to engage the services of experienced personnel to aid in harvesting your honey until you learn the art.

Before harvesting, the first thing to do is to wear a protective cloth, a protective cloth protects you from getting stung by bees, it covers every part of your body so the bees won’t have any place to sting. Next is to remove the outer layer and inner tops of the bee hive, with your smoker puff some smoke into the hive to calm the bees.

The smoke make the bees go down the hive then you remove the upper frame of the hive. From the frame take out the honey comb, if there are any bees on the frame remove it using a brush. With these you are one way to getting your sweet honey. Next is to put the honey comb into a honey pressing machine which strains the comb and brings out the honey and then put it into a storage tank.

Packaging your honey
After you must have gotten your sweet honey, the next step is to package this honey. First and foremost the honey which has just been gotten has to be pre heated (raw honey exempted) using a heating machine, the purpose for the pre heating is to remove or kill substances harmful to the body when taken.

Packaging is a very important part of honey production, it is very important because as we noted earlier honey has different flavors and the flavor your honey has depends on the kind of fruit the bees are being exposed to. So packaging enables customers to know the producers of such sweet honey.

Transparent bottles are good for packaging because most honey consumers are interested in the colours of the honey they want to buy since most times the difference in colour is the difference in taste. Also needed here is label.

Labels help your customers differentiate your honey form others, it helps them easily identify your honey by name when they want to buy. Things to be included in a label includes type of honey (wildflower honey, clover honey), name of producer, net weight,  ingredients (if anything but honey is contained in the bottle)e.t.c. sometimes a packaging machine is used for packaging this makes the work faster but it is optional, it can be done manually by hand. A very important part of honey production is creating a logo, a well-designed logo attracts consumers.

These days everybody would prefer a professional so getting a very good professional logo gives consumers the impression of your professionalism and also affects purchases. All of these helps to develop a brand and developing a brand helps you stay in business.

Types of honey production business
There are several forms of honey production business, we would discuss them before we conclude, they include:

     1)   Refined honey production
The honey produced through this type of honey production process is gold brown as a result of heating. The heating makes the honey smooth but some of its vital nutrients are lost in the process. Also, the yeast within the honey is consumed due to its heating. This type of honey stays longer than the every other type and it is very attractive to look at. It is heat above 95 degrees pasteurization.

     2)   Organic honey production
Avoiding chemicals is the major step in producing organic honey. bee farmers who produce organic honey do not give antibiotics to their bees, the flowers, fruits and nectars these bees suck are not sprayed with any form of chemical this is to avoid the honey which is to be produced losing its organic content. After getting the honey it is usually filtered and pasteurized and the pasteurization level should not be above 95 degrees so that the honey won’t lose it nutrients.

     3)   Raw honey
This is the type of honey gotten and sold in its raw form. When extracted, it is left to settle then filtered and packaged for sale. This form of honey is not heated, it is just filtered using a mesh cloth to remove uneatable particles and then sold out.

  4)   Multi production honey business
As time goes on, as the business improves, honey producers can decide to engage in the production of the several types of honey. Several machines can be purchased for such purposes and several employers employed for such purpose. Honey business is not limited to only a single line of production.

Buying already processed honey for resale
The second way in which you can engage in this business is by buying from those who process their own honey and reselling. This second way is mostly used by people who do not have enough capital to engage in honey processing, mostly students, market women, road side traders e.t.sc.

This form of honey business is very easy to carry out and also has high rates of returns. As a student you can start it in your hostel, buy already packaged ones from the processors and sell.

Selling your honey
After deciding on what form you would want to engage in and following the above procedures the next thing is to sell. Selling of honey is really easy you can promote your honey through word of mouth; you can advertise it in the media (newspaper, radio, t.v). Word of mouth is the easiest way for promoting your honey tells a friend to tell a friend to tell a friend. You can move from one place to another from one office to another, from house to house, door to door.

As a student you can tell your course mates, hostel mates and every mate you have. The internet is one of the means of promoting your business, you need a social media account for this purpose. The internet make the world a small village this helps you reach several people across the world.

As we observed at the beginning honey has a lot of uses, those who don’t eat honey use them for several other things and this makes the market for honey really large. Also, you can take your formula to stores and supermarkets to help sell it. As time goes on you can even become a guide to other sellers on how to make it big in the honey business.

Wish you all the best in your business career.
