According to Wikipedia, poverty is the complete lack of the means necessary to meet basic personal needs such as food, clothing and shelter. It is simply living below the normal standard of living recommended by the United Nations. As Bella Victor noted;

“Poverty is a financial condition,
While being poor is a mental condition”.

In other words there is a very big difference between being poor and poverty. Poverty is simply lack of means for living your preferred life while being poor is something inherent in some poor people which have made them remain poor. Bill Gates a multi-billionaire, a one-time world richest man once said;

“Even if I am kept in the hottest part of a desert in Africa,
I would still be the world richest man because I’ve discovered who I am”

From the quote above you can agree with me that being poor is a state of mind, most of the rich men today were born In poverty but grew up to change things around them. Some of them never allowed their state of poverty get into them, knowing they can change things they worked and did.

Jack ma is a very good example, born into a very poor family in china, failed his university entrance twice and was rejected from a dozen of jobs including one at KFC before finding his third internet company Alibaba. Much said we should focus on our topic of the day reasons why people are poor. There are several reasons why people are poor or remain poor these reasons would be discussed below:

  1)    Improper planning/ lack of planning
Most individuals are poor not because they were born into a poor family, not because may be they’ve not touched or seen money, not because they didn’t go to school but because they didn’t plan well. Some individuals have never for once sit down to plan their lives which is bad. I’ve seen rich business men go from being rich to being poor just because they couldn’t plan or plan well.

Some of them spend all their money investing in one business or the other without any form of restrictions so when these businesses fail it becomes a problem. Some young people these days handle a lot of cash and still don’t know what to do with it so they spend it on unnecessary things, when it is the proper time for them to invest wisely in the right business but as a result of lack of proper or no planning at all, they tend to end up poor.

  2)    Ignorance
One of the major causes of poverty is ignorance. Ignorance is mostly caused by lack of proper education or enlightenment. Being ignorant makes one unaware of the opportunities available to him or her. As is always said ignorance is a disease. An ignorant person does not know how to handle situations if given the opportunity, as a result of their being ignorant they tend to waste what-ever resource they have on things they do not need. This is one major purpose for this platform to help enlighten individuals.

  3)    Excuses and blame shifting
Most times people love giving excuses for not achieving their goals in life they even go to the extent of shifting the blame to others blaming them for one stupid reason or the other. I could remember in my first year in school my class did poorly in exams which made most of our lecturers angry with us, calling us names and stuff but one of our lecturers spoke to us in the beginning of our year two telling us now we’ve seen the results we should not give any excuse, do not blame anyone for your mistakes or failures own them and work on yourself and see.

Of course we all did and today we have the best result in our department. So it is with life do not shift whatever blame you have, no excuses, tackle whatever problem that comes your way no matter who caused it and chase your dreams cause your life depends on it.

  4)    The comfort zone
What is comfort zone? The comfort zone is simply a situation where one feels safe or at ease. It is also a settled method of working that requires little effort and yields barely acceptable results. Anyone who feels comfortable in the comfort zone is bound to remain static, believe me you can’t make any progress in your comfort zone.

 Let me shock you, in your comfort zone you repeat one particular process, one particular method you don’t think outside the box you keep repeating same procedures for different or the same problems, this is one way to know you are dancing in the comfort zone. Believe me you can’t repeat same action or same process and expect a different result. Go out of the normal do what people think is extra ordinary, think big and then poverty would be afraid to come close.

  5)    Lack of long and short term goals
Most poor people or people who end up being poor mostly do not have goals whether long or short term. Long term goals are goals or things which could be achieved in a long time may be in several years’ of plan while short term goals can be achieved in months of plan.

When planning make a list of things you want to achieve in a short period of time may be you would want to save a particular amount within a period of two months, invest in a particular business within a period and so on. Sometimes short term goals leads to long term goals you should also plan ahead for the future, maybe plan on acquiring an asset maybe land, investing on a more bigger business, starting your own business which is dependent on your means. So having long or short term goals is very important because it guides your actions and inactions.

NB: It’s not just about making long or short term goals, it’s about following it. If after writing out these goals of yours and you don’t follow it then it’s of no use. One of the holy books advised people to write out their plans so also we would advise you write out your goals and it would be helpful to paste it where you can easily see it every time maybe close to your mirror or so.

  6)    Poor mentality
You can’t have a poor mentality and not be poor. Once your mentality is poor you are definitely ending a poor man. Having a poor mentality is all about having shallow thinking, thinking everything is impossible, not willing to take risk, remaining in your comfort zone, seeing every idea as not having potential, spending all you have without savings, not having goals, living above your means e.t.c.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, following the above suggestions prevents certain mishaps upcoming entrepreneurs usually face in their businesses. Hard times in business are sure to come but the wise and those with the lion heart are sure to overcome.
